Master's Dissertation

Under the guidance of Dr. Y. C. Cheng and Prof. S. C. Chan, my study focused on developing a small-signal model of grid-following PV inverters by incorporating precise subsystem dynamics, such as those of synchronous generators, excitation systems, and power system stabilizers in MATLAB/Simulink to enhance the accuracy of stability analysis. Through eigenvalue analysis, participation factor analysis, and root locus methods, I identified critical oscillation modes and key parameters affecting system stability.

  • I gained an understanding of inverter control methods.

  • I successfully passed with A-.

Undergraduate Thesis

Under the guidance of Prof. Jiehui ZHENG, I conducted a study on a multi-stage hydrogen energy storage system. The research begins with a literature review and analysis of energy storage methods and their capacity allocation algorithms. Then, I conducted mathematical modeling for the system's three main modules: the power grid, thermal energy grid, and gas grid, which include hydrogen storage, methane synthesis units, and renewable energy generation. Considering factors including system operation and maintenance cost as well as carbon emission cost, I optimized the system's capacity allocation and operational strategies using the Gurobi solver. Finally, by comparing it with traditional energy storage scenarios, I analyzed the advantages of the established system in terms of comprehensive benefits and low carbon emissions.

  • I am familiar with the formulation and solving of sizing and siting planning optimization problems.

  • I successfully passed the defence.

Mathematical Modeler

We developed a mathematical model to estimate used sailboat prices by analyzing a dataset of 3500 sailboats from various regions. This involved examining factors that influence prices, such as boat features and regional economic data. Our analysis delved into the regional effects on pricing and applied these insights to the Hong Kong market. The project resulted in a detailed report with graphics to aid a broker's understanding of market dynamics.

  • I enhanced data analysis and visualization process.

  • I improved teamwork and collaboration abilities.

  • Designated as Successful Participant.

SCUT Student Research Project
2022-2023

Under Prof.Lin ZHU's guidance, our group analyzed wind turbine control technology's impact on grid stability, focusing on small disturbance stability in new power systems. We utilized MATLAB/Simulink to create models, including a single-machine infinite synchronous generator and a three-machine nine-node setup. Then we moved on to combine a wind turbine, inverter and synchronous generator together to study their stability under introducing small disturbance signals. We obtained power flow via BPA and PSCAD simulation according to actual grid node data, and study proposed modle using eigenvalue and FFT analysis. Besides, we tried to refine its grid-tied inverter by adjusting control loops and phase-locked loop.

  • I gained insights into wind turbine control and its impact on grid stability.

  • I developed skills in MATLAB/Simulink for power system modeling.

  • We compiled a report and successfully passed with a high score.

Our project focused on the optimized operation and economic dispatch of a wind-solar-thermal complementary new energy ship microgrid. We analyzed distributed power sources (wind power, photovoltaic power, and OCR ship waste heat recovery) and energy storage batteries (lithium batteries for peak shaving and valley filling) within the Simulink environment, building a corresponding simulation model to analyze the grid's stability. Then, we optimized it with a particle swarm algorithm to balance economic and environmental benefits, and to reduce emissions.

  • I acquired practical experience in constructing physical models to validate theoretical simulations.

  • I gained experience in technical writing and presentation.

  • Awarded The Third Prize at the school level (SCUT)
